What are Hydrosols?
In my previous post, I talked about carrier oils and butters. Now I would like to share some information about hydrofoils. Hydrosols come from the water that the essential oil separated from during steam distillation. This water contains small amounts of the essential oil in it. However, it is not just water with an essential oil in it: it contains its own properties, chemistry, and uses. These aromatic waters add great value to your self care routine. Let’s go over a few powerful hydrosols.
Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus):
Use this hydrosol as a cool compress to put over swollen or itchy eyes. It supports your body’s natural ability to reduce swelling. Its light aroma makes it gentle enough to use in the eye area.
German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita):
German chamomile has cooling effects and many people spray it on their skin irritations, rashes, and injuries. In addition, it makes a good foot spray or can be sprayed in your living space to keep it smelling clean.
Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodra):
A popular hydrosol for men because of the non-floral smell, this hydrosol works as a mouthwash or an after-shower spray. Many people with acne like to use this hydrosol.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita):
This stimulating hydrosol can wake you right up in the mornings. Also noteworthy, the distillers report they notice they get less bug bites with this spray. Although, use caution with this hydrosol with children under three.
Rose (Rosa damascene):
Many people think of their grandma’s when they smell rose. This hydrosol historically was used as a nightly toner for the skin. However, as more processed alternatives became popular, the rose hydrosol went out of use. So bring rose hydrosol back and use it on yourself. Its smell is restorative, and your skin will love you for it.
Sweet Grass (Hierochloe odorata):
Sweet Grass has a clearing smell that works wonderfully as an air freshener. Its scent strengthens when kept in the fridge!!
To sum up, these hydrosols represent a small fraction of the options available. They all have wonderful smells and properties. They are safer than essential oils. Also, they can save you money!! I hope you start incorporating them into your life. If you have questions, I love talking about hydrosols!! Feel free to contact me.
